Topography

Got thinking about a commonly used phrase.

                      Topography
We all live on slippery slopes
            and any apparent plateaus
            are merely narrow ledges.

So the question is do we ski
           or scream until we find
           where the final edge is.

Shake Well Before Serving

A refrigerator poem, of sorts.

                                                Shake Well Before Serving
                                                  is something I seldom do
so what starts thin and runny
                                                  finishes thick and creamy
                                                  like so many drab beginnings
                                                  rescued by their delicious ends.

April

Here's a poem inspired by the annual cherry blossoms in the D.C. area.

      April
What is the truth
of the cherry blossoms?
That they bloom so briefly?
That they return each year?
Or that beauty and brevity
dance together
as long
as the music
lasts.

Oxidation

Here's a bleaker poem, written (as you might guess) while I had a fever last week.

     Oxidation
If breathing is but slow, slow burning
and fire is just rapid rust,
then life is merely a fever dream,
a global warming,
feeding on nothing but
failing flesh and drifting dust.

Personal Hygiene

Restroom procedures have become quite complicated.

                                                Personal Hygiene

                                                            1.
                                                Wash your hands
                                                 while singing
                                                “Happy Birthday”
                                                 to yourself
                                                 twice.

                                                          2.

                                                Dry your hands.
                                                If the paper towel
                                                does not dispense
                                                automatically,
                                                pull it out beforehand.

                                                If the faucet does not
                                                go off automatically,
                                                use the paper towel.

                                                         2a.

If there is a hand dryer
                                                and the faucet does not
                                                go off automatically,
                                                use your elbow(s).
                                                (Do not attempt
                                                to blow it off.)

                                                            3.

                                                Use paper towel or
                                                elbow to push the door
                                                open.

                                                Use your own
                                                ingenuity
                                                for the hand dryer
                                                and doorknob
                                                combination.

                                                            4.

                                                Do not touch anyone
                                                or anything anyone
                                                has touched
                                                ever again.
